Enjoy Fistral Beach, with surf, walks and food
When in Newquay, surfing is a must. The home of surfing in the UK, and Hendra is just a mile and a half from Newquay’s famous surfing beach: Fistral.
Fistral is a favourite for locals and visitors, Fistral’s a long strip of sand, backed by dunes, beautiful surrounding headland and top-class facilities. It is also home to many surfing competitions including Boardmasters.
Surfing with Fistral Beach Surf School and hire
The only surf school and hire on Fistral, and what’s more as a Hendra guest you get 10% off lessons and hire. With beginners and advanced lessons, family friendly lessons, group lessons, as well as romantic sunset surfs if you are looking for a Newquay date night – perfect for a couples’ holiday in Cornwall!
All equipment is provided during the lessons. Want to hire a board and experience the waves? No problem. You can hire bodyboards, stand up paddleboards, and surf boards. Whatever you do, Fistral Beach Surf School will make sure that you have an awesome experience in the big blue.
Changing rooms and hot showers are provided so you can warm and freshen up after and go and visit a nearby restaurant.
Food and Drink
Enjoy the views, and a cold drink, or feast on seafood, pizza or classic fish and chips. There are many food options available, from The Fish House, to Rick Stein’s Fish and Chips, as well as the Boardmasters Beach Bar, with a huge decking space to enjoy a beverage and the views.
Over on south Fistral, there’s SeaSpray which offers delicious hot chocolates, breakfasts, light bites and hearty mains.
Beautiful Headland Walks
Fistral is also a top spot for a coastal walk. You can walk over from Pentire towards south Fistral and either walk the coast path, which runs down the back of the dunes, or across the beach. Over at north Fistral you will see the famous Headland Hotel, and if you follow the coast path around you can continue your walk and see Fistral’s peaceful neighbour Little Fistral. Walk up to Towan Head and see the old Coastguard Hut as well as views across the Bay over to Watergate and over to Fistral.
If you continue around the coast path, away from Fistral, you will pass the Huer’s Hut, a 14th century hut, and relic of Newquay’s fishing past. You can walk around to the picturesque harbour too.

Festivals and Surf Comps
The location of the Boardmasters surfing side of the festival. Boardmasters is on in August from the Wednesday 6th to Sunday the 10th. In this time, Fistral hosts surfing competitions and there’s a village of shops to wander, as well as other exciting events.
Throughout the year there are surfing competitions on, as well us pop-up events at the Boardmasters Beach Bar, including Samba Terrace Parties.
