  • Spring Bank Holiday and lots of events at Hendra

We became almost used to regular Bank Holidays with Easter and the Royal Wedding, so you need to make the most of the last Bank Holiday until the end of August! This weekend we have the Show and Shine car show just yards away from Hendra. So, if you have a VW, or a car that is a little bit different, get out that car polish and head down to us!

It is also the beginning of half term, and the following weekend we have the Hendra Family Campout, which celebrates National Camping Week and National Family Week. We have had record numbers of bookings this year, but don’t fear there are still a few spaces left! The fun kicks off at 12pm of Friday the 3rd of June and in the evening there will be:

6:30pm: A visit from Henry the Hippo
    7:00pm: Face-paints and circus fun
    8:00pm: Family welly wanging competition
8:30pm: Lighting of the fire pits (to keep toasty!)
    9:00pm: Egg and spoon race
    9:30 pm: Family quiz

    On Saturday the fun continues:

6:30pm: Another visit from Henry the Hippo
7:00pm: Family barbeque (bring our own food)
7:30pm: Face painting and marshmallow toasting
    8:00pm: Family rounders
8:30pm: Lighting of the fire pits
    9:00pm: Music

The campout ends on Sunday at 4pm. All this fun is just £11 for children and £6 for adults for both nights!

There's lots more going on at Hendra soon including the Japanese Car Show, on the 11th and 12th of June, where all proceeds go to Shelterbox to help the victims of the recent disasters in Japan. We also have the Classic Ford Show, held by the Duchy Capri Club, from Friday the 24th – Sunday the 26th of June. Phew – we will be tired!

  • Hendra plans to become sun-powered!

Hendra is planning to install PV Solar panels on adjacent farmland, which means that we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels by 50%. These solar panels convert sunlight to electricity, which is an environmentally-friendly and sustainable electricity source.

    Some Facts:
    • Having the PV panels will save up to 340 tonnes of CO2 per year
    • The PV panels will take up 10 acres of land
    • Hendra’s current on site electricity consumption is over 1.5GWhrs per year
    • Hendra’s electricity usage could be cut by up to 50% - up to 400 residential homes

    Our recent press release:
Proposed plans to become sun-powered taking shape at local holiday park.
Hendra Holiday announces a public consultation and exhibition on Wednesday 20th April between 3pm and 7.30pm in the run up to seeking planning permission for a ground based solar PV array.
Jon Hyatt, for Hendra, said “Solar PV is a renewable energy source that work by converting sunlight directly into electricity without waste or pollution.  Hendra’s current electricity consumption is over 1.5GWhrs per year, the equivalent of almost 400 residential houses. Hendra have already implemented multiple energy efficient and saving measures over several years but this still leaves a large demand for a reliable electricity supply.
As part of Hendra’s Environmental Business Strategy we have considered the application of a wide range of renewable energy sources to the site, including wind turbines and biomass boilers. Feasibility studies of solar PV technologies have been very positive and the seasonal variation of the site’s power demand mirrors the yearly fluctuation in solar PV generation capacity.
As a result of substantial work and due diligence studies to date, we aim to submit a formal planning permission for a 0.9MW solar PV array, covering approximately 10 acres on adjacent farmland. Our estimates indicate that such an installation could meet up to 50% of Hendra’s current electricity usage; reducing our dependence on finite fossil fuels, saving up to 340 tonnes of CO2 per year and crucially enhancing the long term sustainability of the business.
As part of this development process we recognise the importance of seeking an interaction with our local community, hence announcing a public consultation and exhibition, where we hope to have the opportunity to explain the proposals in greater detail, gather and respond to feedback and of course answer any questions raised.
Should our application be successful, we also plan to use our solar PV installation as a free educational resource for schools. We will also be investing in electrical vehicle charging points, for free use on site by the public, as part of a wider community investment in sustainable transport infrastructure. Supporting the public consultation and exhibition will be ‘eco-drive’, Cornwall’s premier electric vehicle resource, with a number of electric vehicles on show.
We welcome any questions prior to the event at energy@hendra.co.uk or on 01637 875778.”

  • Hendra Strikes Gold again with the David Bellamy Conservation Award

Hendra’s pleased to announce that we have been awarded a Gold David Bellamy Conservation award once again for 2010 and 2011.

The David Bellamy award is given to parks that work to maintain Britain’s natural environment. It is very important to us at Hendra to maintain the beautiful Cornish countryside around us, along with its wildlife. We have lots of wildlife on our park, which children can spot on our nature trial.

We are also committed to staying green and actively promoting recycling on the park amongst guests and staff, and we would like to thank our guests for recycling with Henry!

We are very keen to keep the park looking beautiful and up to a five-star standard. Hendra has recently planted more trees and increased the amount of hanging baskets and flowerbeds. Also, this year we have recycled tyre chippings in all of our play areas.

David Bellamy said: “Hendra is one of the stars of the scheme, so well done on keeping your standards so high.”

This year we plan to make Hendra even greener and we are sure that our wonderful guests will help us to make 2011 our greenest year yet!
