  • Hendra comes out top at Cornwall Sustainability Awards, 2011

Hendra has scooped the Overall Winner Award at the Cornwall Sustainability Awards 2011, held last Friday (December 9th), after also winning the Best Large Managed Company Award.

The Awards were held at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge. There were 200 people there to celebrate the work businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are doing to improve their sustainability.

Hendra was very pleased to win the award and Will Dexter, one of the directors, said: “This award presents a huge pat on the back to the whole team. We think what we are doing is right and it’s nice to know that it is recognised.”

Jon and Will with the Sustainability Award

This year Hendra has made great efforts to become more sustainable with our brand new solar farm, and conservation efforts.

The Event Organiser, Gitty Ankers MBE, from the Environment Agency said: “The judges were undivided in their decision of awarding the overall winner to Hendra Holiday Park.”

Jon Hyatt, also a director, said: “We are so happy to win an award for something that we are all so passionate about here at Hendra.”

  • Positioning the Perrans!

Hendra Holiday Park is still full of activity in the wintertime, with lots of things to be done on site to get ready for the 2012 season, which is our 40th Anniversary year!

Our staff have been busily transforming our Cherry field, before Christmas, by saying goodbye to the Pentires and hello to the Perrans, our new top-of-the-range superior holiday home.

    Perrans replacing the Pentires

The team were unplumbing and de-rigging the old caravans, in November, keen to get the Pentires out and the new Perrans in. A huge crane which could be seen for miles around the Cornish countryside hoisted away the Pentires as the first Perran-loaded wide-load lorries made their way down the M5, onto the A30 to their new home at Hendra!

These extra special holiday homes are fitted to high specification with all the most luxurious fittings that make them a home-from-home. Look at our photo here and watch this space for the new video of the Perran, which will be out in the New Year!

  • Smiling with the Hill family

Hendra met the second winners of the Smile for Hendra competition, the Hill family from Swindon, who came down on our final half-term week, which was packed with Halloween fun and end of season celebrations! The competition ran at the beginning of the year to find models for our 2012 Hendra brochure, and after sifting through many entries we couldn’t just pick one so we picked two, and you may remember the Crome family from July.

The Hill family on Fistral beachThe winners won a weeks’ holiday in our top-of-the-range Watergate holiday home.Tony Hill, along with his wife, Barbara, and two children Lara and Rhian were all really pleased to win, Tony said:  “We were all really excited about winning the competition, as we have visited Hendra for the last two years camping, so it was nice to stay in a luxury holiday home for a change.”

The shoot involved photos on Fistral beach, at the arcade, reception and in the accommodation. Sara Cross, who organised the competition and is Hendra’s Marketing Manager, said: “It was lovely to work with a family that were happy and so patient, as photo shoots can sometimes get a bit trying!”

A big thank you to the Hill family! Look out for both families by requesting a 2012 brochure, or viewing the brochure online!

  • Wow – what a season!

It only seems like a few weeks ago that we were opening on March 31st, and now, as the cold weather sets in, it is the end of yet another fantastic season. This season has been full of new and exciting things at Hendra, along with annual events, and hot weather when we least expect it!

April saw some glorious weather, with lots of Bank Holidays over Easter and, who can forget, the Royal Wedding, which, even if you didn’t care about it, provided another Bank Holiday! May saw a few more Bank Holidays, and there was the Show and Shine car show, right by Hendra, at the end of the month. At the beginning of June we had the incredibly successful Hendra Family Campout with games galore, entertainment for the whole family and stories around the campfire. Later in June we had the Japanese Car Show, to raise money for the disasters in Japan, and later on in the month the Ford Car Show.

In July Hendra had the big switch on of a 10-acre solar farm called Sun Power Meadow, one of the first large-scale solar projects in UK, and, we believe, the first holiday park to have its own source of renewable energy! The summer holidays kicked off and we saw the arrival of the FloRider, an exhilarating water-based ride suitable for thrill-seekers of all ages. The FloRider proved a popular activity along with the Segways too, both offering discounts for Hendra residents. We had the arrival of our Smile for Hendra competition winners the Crome family, on July 23rd, who will be in the 2012 brochure and website. August was a busy month with the 30th Anniversary of Relentless Boardmasters. Hendra made the most of the summer with communal barbeques in the week, where you could bring your own food and drink Skinner’s beer. Hendra appointed a new director too, Jon Hyatt, firmly establishing the next generation of our family run park.

In September we had the annual Cornish Bluegrass Festival, and at the end of the month, into October, we had an unseasonal mini heat wave. In October there were great special offers, and our fun-packed Halloween half term week, with spooky games, pumpkin carving, the ghost train and fancy dress. Half term also saw the arrival of our other Smile for Hendra winners the Hill family, who will also be in our 2012 brochure and website. On Sunday we had our end of season party on the 30th of October, which was fantastic!

Here’s a taster of what’s in store next season: we have a brand new caravans coming called the Perrans. The Perrans are going to be the top of the range holiday homes with wall mounted flat screen TV’s and a facility to ‘dock’ music devices, plus en suite facilities, and the very latest in furnishing style. There are going to be more HendraPods, after the great success of this year’s HendraPod. For our younger guests there is going to be a play park that includes a skate and scooter ramp. Thank you to all of our guests that agreed to add a 20p donation onto the cost of your booking. It went to the Precious Lives Appeal, which is raising money to build a desperately needed children’s hospice in Cornwall. You have raised £1,462, so well done!

On the subject of thank you we would like to say a big thank you to all of our guests for making the 2011 season fantastic! We look forward to seeing you in 2012!

  • Longboard tour returns to Watergate Bay

Cornish surfer Ben Skinner could take a step closer to winning a hat-trick of European titles as an international longboard competition comes to Watergate Bay next month.

The Extreme Academy will host the second leg of the European Tour of Longboard (ETL) on the 8th and 9th October in an event which attracts the cream of the continent’s longboard surfers.

O'Neil Classic ETLSkinner has been the in-form surfer in European competitions this year, wrapping up the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) European longboard title in August, and last weekend claiming a win at Vieux Boucau, south west France, in the first of four ETL events.

Round 2, the 2 star rated O’Neill Classic ETL Watergate Bay, will be taking place on familiar territory for Skinner, 26, who considers the Cornish beach his local spot. He said: “I’m really looking forward to the next event at Watergate Bay, it’s great to be coming in to my home event off the back of a win in France. The last round was one of the toughest competitions I’ve surfed - the level of surfing is really high, especially with the French and British surfers dominating the longboard scene at the moment in Europe.

“I’d really like to thank O’Neill and all the other event sponsors because their financial support makes it possible for this competition to take place. This event means a huge amount to me because the sport in Britain is so strong at the moment, and it’s great to be able to bring the top European guys over here to see what it’s all about in Cornwall.”

Spectators at the free event will be able to enjoy two days of top-level surfing. Reigning French champion Alexis Daniel and the 2010 ETL champion Remi Arauzo are both taking part along with top British surfers.

Judges will score the surfers on a blend of classical and radical manoeuvres, with the event winner securing 1,100 championship points and a share of the €5,000 prize fund.

Current English champion Adam Griffiths is also confirmed to take part, and the Newquay-based surfer is hoping to improve on his fourth place overall in the 2010 ETL campaign.

Adam Griffiths said: “It’s fantastic to have this event in Cornwall, I love surfing at Watergate Bay and I’m really looking forward to welcoming the European guys over here. The standard of surfing goes up every year and the scene is really strong in the UK and France, it always seems to be 50-50 between the two nations when you get down to the semi-finals and the finals.”

Up to 50 riders of nine different nationalities are expected to enter the event, with competitors required to register at Watergate Bay between 5pm and 7pm on Friday 7th October. The competition is set to start at 9am on both the 8th and 9th of October.

On Saturday evening a fundraising event will be supporting the Joe Way Paddle charity, with prizes donated by sponsors and live music at The Phoenix, Watergate Bay.

Minnow Green from the British Longboard Union will be the contest director, and the event is funded by sponsorship from O’Neill, The Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay, Skinners Brewery, Relentless, Hendra Holiday Park, Rocky Point, Newquay Surfing School, Skindog Surfboards, Board Barn, 100% Organics, Carve magazine, and Perran Signs & Graphics.

After Watergate Bay, the surfers move on to Morocco and Portugal in November for the concluding rounds.

More information on this and other events at Watergate Bay can be found at www.watergatebay.co.uk/events.

If you are looking for accommodation for this weekend Hendra are offering 50% off our touring tariff on the 8th & 9th October, please quote the code ETL when booking.

  • Hendra gets the Blues

The Cornish Bluegrass festival came to Hendra for the 8th year running. Last weekend Hendra saw hundreds of keen musicians and fans gather for three days of celebration, fun and toe tapping. This year’s line up saw acts such as Debby McClatchy, born in San Francisco, the UK’s own New Essex Bluegrass band and Cornwall’s Flats and Sharps, who made a name for themselves busking in Penzance

Flats and Sharps buskin in Penzance

Hendra’s fantastic 500 seater cabaret hall was transformed into a banjo and guitar picking palladium. Meanwhile, the stunning grounds played host to a huge marquee complete with hay-bales for festive seating.

There was much enjoyment had by all, including many of Hendra’s regular guests who are now true converts.

The park certainly seems different now the sound of twinging and twanging is no longer in the air. But we look forward to welcoming the Cornish Bluegrass Association back for their 9th annual celebration.

  • Awesome autumn

On the last day of ‘official summer’ we must admit that we are quite looking forward to autumn at Hendra. Cornwall is quieter, the temperatures drop slightly, but it is still mild, and there is nothing more refreshing than a bracing beach walk! As well as the leaves falling so do our prices, as we have some amazing autumn deals on for our short breaks in October, including our centrally heated premium holiday homes. And this September we still have room for camping and touring; it is still warm enough!

Hendra is ideally situated for exploring all of Cornwall, and here is a run down of some food festivals around Cornwall this autumn.

The popular Newquay Fish Festival kicks off the food festival season, on from the 9th – 11th of September right on Hendra’s doorstep, with lots of delicious local delicacies to sample. There are local chefs rustling up some wonderful food, and doing some great demonstrations. There will also be a range of food and craft stalls as well as family entertainment over the weekend at Newquay’s picturesque harbour.

    Newquay Fish Festival

Truro is the venue for the Cornwall Food and Drink Festival which draws in thousands of visitors from the 23rd – 25th of September. This festival is the biggest festival of Cornish food and drink in the county. There will be top chefs here sharing their tips and techniques. Children can enjoy the festival too in the Funky Food Zone, new for this year, and the festival goes on after sunset.

The foodie fun continues into October with the Boscastle Food, Arts and Crafts Festival, with eight highly esteemed chefs demonstrating from some of Cornwall’s top restaurants. These chefs include Nathan Outlaw, proud owner of 2 Michelin Stars from the St Enodoc Hotel, Andy Appleton from Fifteen Cornwall, winner of this year’s desert course from the Great British Menu, chefs from two terrific restaurants in Padstow including Paul Ainsworth from Number 6 and Paul Harwood from Rick Steins St.Petrocs Bistro.

In mid-October, from the 13th – 16th, is the Falmouth Oyster Festival with cookery demonstrations. This festival coincides with the start of the oyster season and celebrates the Falmouth working boats and oyster punts. Local oysters are known for their sweet and delicate flavour, which you can enjoy with live music in a relaxed festival environment.

    Falmouth Oyster Festival

Back at Hendra we have the Cornish Bluegrass Festival on over the weekend of the 16th of September. The music originates from the American South and is a mix of folk and blues. Artists include Debby McClatchy, born in San Francisco, the UK’s own New Essex Bluegrass Band and Cornwall’s Flats and Sharps, who made a name for themselves busking in Penzance. There are many more so checkout their website. All of this is held in the comfort of Hendra’s five star facilities.

    Bluegrass at Hendra

September and October is also ideal for exploring parts of Cornwall that you just could not be bothered with in peak season as it was too crowded, or go to the places that were fully booked – such as one of Cornwall’s top restaurants.

Cornwall has huge selection of restaurants to choose from including the ones mentioned above like Paul Ainsworth’s No. 6, who appeared on the BBC series Great British Menu. No. 6 is in Padstow along with Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant and St. Petrocs Bistro. On the subject of famous chefs there is Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen, in Watergate Bay, with a menu of locally sourced ingredients with a distinctive Italian style. There are also plenty of delicious dining experiences within a few miles of Hendra, including Silks in Newquay, which serves locally caught fish and there is a sushi bar. At Porth there is the Beaucliffes restaurant with a wide variety of choices from favourites with a twist such as sausage and mash and beer battered fish and chips, to venison, pan seared tuna steaks and roast salt and peppered duck breast.

    Silks, Newquay

We hope that we have wet your appetite for a foodie autumn break, and given you some ideas!  Also remember the coastline is still beautiful, the weather is still good, and the National Trust properties and gorgeous gardens are less crowded, so autumn really is one of the most peaceful and perfect times to visit!

  • Hendra Appoints a New Director

Hendra Holiday Park has appointed a new director, firmly establishing the next generation of the family run park. Jon Hyatt, 26, is the son of the directors Bob and Janine Hyatt and the nephew of directors Robert and Rebecca May.

Jon went to the University of Oxford where he studied Chemistry and after going travelling for several months with his soon to be wife, Jodie, he returned to Cornwall in 2008. Rather than a career in the city he decided to come back to Cornwall: “I realised what a great place Cornwall was, and you can’t beat it, with dramatic scenery right on your doorstep it has so much to offer. Of course the opportunity to join the family business was fantastic and the main driver for returning. After three years in the business I certainly see my future here.”

    Jon Hyatt

Jon is especially interested in enhancing the park on a sustainable level and was closely involved in the latest project for creating Hendra’s Solar PV farm, named Sun Power Meadow: “Sun Power Meadow has been one of the park’s main priorities for a while and I was pleased when it was completed on time early last month. As Hendra’s new director I hope to be part of lots of new and innovative sustainability projects.”

Jon also said: “I am really looking forward to the new challenges and responsibilities in this new role, in what is a dynamic company with a great team behind it. In addition to specific development projects such as minimising our future energy costs I will also be taking an in depth look at the various aspects and operations of the business, so I will certainly be very busy!”
